Texas Vision is one of the leading providers of LASIK and vision correction in Central Texas. Our highly trained surgeons have performed thousands of LASIK procedures throughout their careers here in Central Texas. Utilizing only the most advanced technology, we strive to provide only the best care for each and every patient.

What is LASIK?

Vision correction surgery has been around for several years. LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is one of the most popular types of laser vision correction. This procedure is used to improve vision in people with all forms of refractive errors: nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. It does this by changing the shape of the cornea, the clear part on the surface of the eye. By reshaping the cornea, the eye can focus or bend light more accurately onto the retina, at the back of the eye, which allows you to see more clearly.

In cases where a patient has thinner corneas or certain conditions that affect the surface of the eye, Texas Vision also offers ASA (Advanced Surface Ablation) which is a more modern form of PRK, a popular LASIK alternative. These procedures are very similar to LASIK and can provide more options for those that do not necessarily qualify as LASIK candidates.

Who is a Candidate for LASIK?

Texas Vision offers patients a multitude of vision correction options. We are committed to providing a solution that is right for you. Our LASIK surgeons always take the time to discuss with you the very best options for your specific situation and long-term eye health. Consultations for any vision correction procedures are free and take just 60 minutes.

Good Candidates include the following:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Stable eyeglass and contact lens prescription for at least 2-3 years
  • Stable vision over at least the past year
  • No significant medical or eye problems, including corneal ulcers, keratoconus, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, or glaucoma.
  • No significant dry eye
  • Eyeglass prescription within certain limits set by your eye surgeon

We also offer FREE virtual consults to help answer any questions you have on our LASIK experience or to help understand if you would be a good candidate. Additionally, we offer a FREE LASIK Self Test to understand if it would be a good fit for you.

What Happens at my Screening Exam?

At this step, we are making sure you are a good candidate for laser vision correction. In order for us to get the most accurate measurements, we will ask you to stay out of your contacts for a specific length of time prior to the screening exam. This allows you corneas to “relax” back to their natural shape as contacts can distort your corneas over time.

On your initial visit, you will be screened for eye diseases, such as keratoconus and retinal problems. We will also perform a refraction to understand your current vision errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism). Then lastly, we will complete a corneal topography exam to “map” your corneas. From these measurements, we will be able to get the full picture on if LASIK is the best option for your eyes.

What Should I Expect During the LASIK Procedure?

The day of your LASIK procedure is an exciting one. It’s normal to feel a little nervous or anxious. You are in good hands, and we will take great care of you during this quick experience.

Upon arrival, one of our technicians will take you back to start the pre-procedure set up.

Once in the surgical suite, a few numbing drops are used on the eyes and the eyes are cleaned. You’ll lay back on a pillow and a lid holder is used so you don’t have to worry about blinking. From there, the flap will be created using the Ziemer laser, which is the fastest and most precise laser in the country.

Next, a laser that has been pre-programmed with your custom treatment is used to reshape your cornea. You don’t have to worry about any eye movement during this procedure as the laser has a very refined pupil tracking system that can follow any tiny movement you might make.

The flap is then gently placed back in position. A few drops are then administered and you are all done! The entire procedure usually takes less than 10-15 minutes.

You will wear protective glasses for the remainder of the day and your vision starts to improve in hours! Most patients are able to resume their normal routine and activities the day after their procedure.
